Jenner Court – Retirement Living Plus – McCarthy & Stone

My Mom’s been in Jenner Court for nearly two years now and absolutely loves it. She has her own modern flat which overlooks a garden and the other facilities of the large lounge, outside seating area, dining area, laundry and scooter store are well maintained and well used.

One of the reasons Mom moved to Jenner Court was so that she could maintain her independence whilst still getting support as and when she required it. The extra support is carried out by the team at Jenner Court and this provides continuity of care by a staff member whom is known to the resident. This makes such a difference to the resident and we found when researching the options available to Mom when she was moving to Cheltenham, that this wasn’t available in many of the venues that she was considering. Having a restaurant on site also means that Mom can plan her week and can choose when she would like to eat on site with the company of other residents. Mom invites us along every so often and certainly the fish and chips on a Friday should not be missed!

There are also lots of different activity groups that happen each week along with events that are organised by both the residents and staff. It is up to the residents whether they wish to take part.

The staffing team who help run Jenner Court are all professional, friendly and reliable and they go the extra mile with residents to ensure that they settle well and feel at home. Mom was very hesitant when she moved, but with the help of the staff and residents, she settled and is very happy.

Jenner Court has provided very adequate supported living for my mother who is in her late 80s. They kept her safe over Covid and have provided a good level of service in the years following despite the shortage of staff in the care sector. More recently, they have greatly improved the catering offer, which remains based on fixed sittings with a limited choice of menu. While more rigid than the “bistro” model it promotes social interaction and the food is now of a very good standard. While on-site services have suffered in the past from an inability to recruit and retain site managers, David, the site manager who has been in post for a while now is very highly regarded by residents and brings a very personal touch, with a full schedule of social events. The building is of a high standard and well maintained – common areas have recently been refurbished adding to the ambience. There is plenty of on-site parking.

My Mum has been at Jenner Court for 5 years. She is very well looked after by a more or less permanent group of dedicated, caring and compassionate staff. She gets to know her carers well. I only hope that Brexit doesn’t put off such lovely staff from coming here to look after our family members in their dotage. As it is an assisted living complex, she only has to press a button or pull a cord for instant help. It has given me (her son) great peace of mind knowing that she is cared for so well. The flexibility of care is really good, as she can increase or decrease her carer/cleaning hours when required. The flat is spacious, very warm, clean and modern. My Mum can be sociable when she wishes, or she can stay in her apartment when she wants her own space. I can’t recommend it highly enough.
